Topkapi Films was founded in 2011 by Frans van Gestel and Arnold Heslenfeld, former producers of IDTV Film that originated in 2008 by the merger of Motel Films and IDTV. Frans van Gestel produced, first by himself and later with Arnold Heslenfeld, films such as THE MAGICIANS, JOY (Dutch Film Award best film 2010), BLACK BUTTERFLIES (Dutch Film Award best film 2011), CODE BLUE (selection Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes 2011) and THE HEINEKEN KIDNAPPING. In the area of drama they are responsible in part for series such as ‘T SPAANSE SCHAEP, BLOEDVERWANTEN, EILEEN, MIXED UP and END OF LINE.
With Topkapi Films, they continue the company in a smaller formation – but with as much care and love for films – that keeps making films for the Dutch and foreign market. Right now, the priority lies with the current productions: THE FAMILY WAY (Joram Lürsen), THE RESURRECTION OF A BASTARD (opening film IFFR 2013, Guido van Driel), ALTIJD ZONDAG (Eché Janga) and NUDE AREA (Urszula Antoniak). On the international level Topkapi co-produces THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN (Felix van Groeningen), LAYLA FOURIE (Berlinale competition 2013, Pia Marais,) POST TENEBRAS LUX (Carlos Reygadas) and SO MUCH WATER (Ana Guevara & Leticia Jorge).
