The 39th edition of the Netherlands Film Festival opens on Friday the 27th of September with Instinct, Halina Reijn’s directorial debut starring Carice van Houten and Marwan Kenzari. The psychological thriller about an experienced psychologist, who in spite of her expertise and experience is completely infatuated by a sex offender, premieres in the presence of leading actors Carice van Houten and Marwan Kenzari. Both actors enjoy international fame and will walk the red carpet for the festive premiere in Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. Topkapi Films produced Instinct and Man Up – Reijn’s and van Houten’s company – initiated and coproduced the film. The Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) runs from the 27th of September to the 5th of October of 2019.
In Instinct, Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones) plays Nicoline, a psychologist working in a penal institution, finding herself trapped in a power play with her client Idris. Idris, portrayed by Marwan Kenzari (Wolf, Aladdin), is about to go on his first unaccompanied probation. Nicoline is skeptical and tries to push his probation, which causes Idris to slowly transform into the manipulative man she had seen in him from the start. Supporting roles are played by Marie-Mae van Zuilen, Ariane Schluter, Betty Schuurman, Pieter Embrechts, Tamar van den Dop, Robert de Hoog, Juda Goslinga en Akwasi Owusu Ansah and more.

The screenplay was written by Esther Gerritsen, based on an idea by Halina Reijn inspired by true events. Gerritsen is known for her novels De Trooster, Roxy and Dorst and has worked on the feature films Nena and Dorst.
Halina Reijn has performed exquisite roles in both theatre (Obesession, La Voix Humaine, Hedda Gabler) and film (Zus & Zo, Zwartboek, Valkyrie). She has worked with director Ivo van Hove for Internationaal Theater Amsterdam since 2012. In 2005 Halina debuted her novel Prinsesje Nooitgenoeg and in 2013 she and Carice van Houten published the bestseller Antiglamour. She also wrote various columns, such as the weekly column in the Saturday edition of Flemish newspaper De Morgen. Instinct is her directorial debut.
Instinct a Topkapi Films production, in coproduction with Man Up and BNNVARA. The film came about with support of the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Production Incentive and CoBO. The film will be released in theatres on October 3rd by distributor September Film.
The official public premiere of Instinct will also be on Friday the 27th of September. Tickets are available at www.filmfestival.nl. During the festival Instinct is also part of NFF’s regular festival program.
