Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown is nominated for the David Di Donatello Award for Best European Film. The prestigious Italian Film Awards are regarded as the Italian counterpart of the American Oscars and the French Césars. The winners will be announced in Rome on June 12th.

The Broken Circle Breakdown is an intense love story between Elise and Didier. She runs her own tattoo shop and he is a Flemish cowboy playing the banjo in a small band. It’s love at first sight…although they are worlds apart. Chalk and cheese; completely different and yet perfectly compatible. When their daughter Maybelle is born, their happiness is complete.

Two years after the world premiere and winning the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale, the film has won awards at Tribeca film festival, CPH: Pix in Copenhagen, the European Seville Film Festival and Karlovy Vary. Also Veerle Baetens was awarded Best European Actress at the European Film Awards. Felix van Groeningen received the LUX award from the European Parliament.

The film won the César for the Best Foreign Film and on top of that was nominated for the Oscar as Best Foreign Film.

Dirk Impens of Menuet (Belgium) produced The Broken Circle Breakdown in co-production with Topkapi Films (The Netherlands). They are now producing Felix van Groeningen’s new film Belgica together.
